Vernon West Memorial Roping

In 2009, the 1st Community Credit Union Spur Arena inherited the Vernon West Memorial Roping Classic. The roping was originally held in Sonora, Texas, but due to its increasing popularity, was forced to move to a new facility which features all aspects the organizers were looking for. Climate controlled and accustomed to this type of event, the 1st Community Credit Union Spur Arena compliments the roping very well and will only allow for growth in the future.

Over 500 ropers compete during the last weekend in March. Jackpot money is distributed in a men's and women's team roping and an open calf roping with some of the top names in the business competing. Established in 2005 as a tribute to the late Vernon West, a West Texan with a deep appreciation for riding, roping and rodeo, organizers of the event set out to raise money for scholarships and carry out Vernon West's good name. Proceeds from the Memorial Roping support kids with agriculture backgrounds and ultimately provide scholarships for high school seniors involved in 4-H, FFA and rodeo. Since its inception, over $40,000 has been awarded to graduating students.
